Résumé : Contemporary historiography of philosophy and science has increasingly questioned traditional categories. Alongside this trend, new historiographical concepts have emerged—intended to complement, or even replace, some of the frameworks handed down by tradition. A striking example is the category of the “Scientific Revolution.” Once a hallmark of Western historiographical interpretations of early modern transformations in knowledge and intellectual life, this notion has become the object of radical reassessment, and in some quarters, of outright rejection. 1 In response, a number of alternative theoretical and epistemological categories have gained traction: from that of practical knowledge—which re-evaluates the role of artisanal and hands-on experience in the development of modern science 2 —to the global history of science, which challenges the supposed uniqueness and self-contained development of Western science.
