Résumé : The paper explores the relationship between the EU and the Belarusian democratic opposition amid Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. It draws on postcolonial and decolonial approaches in IR and involves participant observation of meetings between the EU promoters and the Belarusian opposition. The article shows that the Belarusian opposition has displayed decolonial and self-colonial tendencies, wanting to move away from Russian and Soviet modernity by embracing an alternative EU modernity. The EU responds positively to these tendencies by co-constructing the Belarusian democratic opposition as the “good-Other.” Additionally, the Belarusian opposition seeks to “uncouple” itself from the Russian opposition in the EU democracy promotion projects and agenda. However, the EU views both the Belarusian and Russian oppositions as a counterweight to the Kremlin, considering them key actors in regional democratisation in the event of Russia’s defeat in the war.
