Résumé : Reading engagement is a key component of the virtuous circle between reading motivation and reading proficiency. However, few studies have examined this factor in depth. Moreover, reading engagement is usually assessed with self-reported questionnaires, limiting reliability. The aim of the study was to develop an objective measure of cognitive reading engagement using eye tracking combined with an attentional measurement task. Participants had to read texts while their eye movements were recorded. At the same time, they had to respond as quickly as possible to auditory probes. Two texts were presented: one considered engaging, the other much less so. We expected the participants to have distinct eye movement patterns (increased total reading time, reduced number of regressions, shorter fixation durations for the less engaging text) and different reaction times to the probes, depending on their level of engagement with the texts. The results show differences according to the type of text.
