Résumé : The Brussels embryologists Albert Dalcq (1893- 1973) and Albert Brachet (1869-1930), in their review books, make a little allusion to the concept of vitalism, at a time when the community of biologists and philosophers was perturbated by a very hard debate that pitted materialists against vitalists. This contribution summarises the opposingviews, as well as contemporary hypotheses about the origin of life. It concludes that the scepticism and wideranging knowledge of both Brussels scientists have kept them out of the controversy, thanks to their open mind to new future scientific data.
