Résumé : Total hydroxyproline (hypro) was determined in synovial fluid of patients with inflammatory and degenerative joint diseases. The level of synovial hypro is significantly raised in inflammatory joint diseases and a linear correlation can be shown between red blood cell sedimentation rates (RBCSR) and synovial hypro in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A comparison is made between synovial hypro and other parameters of joint inflammatory condition such as leucocytosis and protein contents. Both parameters, although raised in RA synovial fluids, exhibit no correlation with RBCSR. The latter being a reliable test of inflammation in connective tissue diseases it may be tentatively concluded that high synovial hypro locally reflects the intensity of inflammation in RA.
