Résumé : According to Suetonius, emperor Otho when leaving Rome in order to fight Vitellius, commits impious deeds against the Tiber, Mars and the goddess Cybele. The emperor did not take the bad omen of the overflow of the Tiber seriously ; in doing this, he is totally different from Augustus who had to cope with the flooding of the Tiber when he was barely a princeps. Moreover, Otho's opponents believed that his contempt for ceremonies in honour of the god Mars was fatal to him.
