Résumé : About a decade ago the Belgian Hypertension Committee endorsed the guidelines for the management of hypertension as proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Society of Hypertension (ISH) in 1999. These guidelines have been adapted by the European Societies of Hypertension and of Cardiology in 2003 and more recently in 2007. The core of the document consists of the classification of hypertension according to blood pressure, the evaluation and global risk stratification of the individual patient, and the guidelines for management, non-pharmacological measures and antihypertensive drug treatment. The document also includes information on epidemiology, risk factors, complications of hypertension and the results from large intervention trials with regard to morbidity and mortality. The present manuscript will mainly cover those aspects which are of practical importance for the physician.
