Résumé : | Ukraine has gained independence in 1991, after a long existence in the Soviet Union. Following its dissolution, Ukraine was faced with numerous choices : join a pro-Russian coalition such as most post-Soviet counties, or reach out to its Western partners and become closer with the European Union. The Ukrainian government has long tried to unite both political alliances, however since the Revolution of Dignity in 2014, it has become clear that the European Union is the choice of Ukraine. The Presidencies of P. Poroshenko and V. Zelensky have each contributed to the Europeanization of Ukraine and its 'rapprochement' with the EU. President Poroshenko has achieved a lot during his presidency : the Association Agreement, the Visa-free regime and the decentralization reforms. Despite the changes and improvements, Ukraine remained far from a European accession. As such, it was important for Zelenskyy to continue the effort of Europeanization. Zelenskyy, due to his political inexperience, has struggled at the beginning of his cadency to improve EU-Ukraine relations. A constitutional crisis and other issues have altered the course of Ukraine. However, it is the Russian invasion of Ukraine which accelerated and strengthened the bond between both parties. The candidate status of Ukraine is a historic moment, breaking EU out of its 'enlargement fatigue' potentially changing the future functioning of the EU and Ukraine |
