Résumé : Netilmicin, an aminoglycoside, was evaluated as antibacterial prophylaxis in 33 episodes of neutropenia among 31 patients. Among them, 6 developed septicemia, with gram-negative bacilli (Ps. aeruginosa) in 1 case and gram-positive cocci in 5 cases (1 Str. sanguis, 2 Str. agalactiae, 1 Staph. epidermidis and 1 Staph. aureus). Only the Staph. epidermidis and 1 of the Str. agalactiae were susceptible to netilmicin. None of the septicemic strains was isolated from the stools and none of the patients was persistently colonized by gram-negative bacilli during the episode of neutropenia. In 5 out of the 6 septicemic patients, the blood neutrophil count was less than 100 μl when sepsis occurred. Netilmicin, an odorless and tasteless antibiotic, is well tolerated as oral prophylaxis and seems to prevent gram-negative bacillary infections in neutropenic cancer patients.
