| This thesis is part of the broader programme of constructing knot invariants that would categorify the conjectural knot invariants of J. Fine. These invariants would be defined, by adapting the ideas of Donaldson and Thomas, through the construction of a Floer homology for a certain functional $mathcal F$ acting on the space of surfaces in the twistor space $Z$ of four-dimensional hyperbolic space. The critical points of this functional are pseudoholomorphic curves, and the gradient flow lines are associative submanifolds in the product $Z imes mathbb R$ of the twistor space with the real line. This work is centred around the study of the moduli space of associative submanifolds of $Z imes mathbb R$, an essential first step towards the construction of the aforementioned Floer homology. The special associative submanifolds considered have, as boundary, a product of the real line with the twistor lift of a certain knot (or link), together with two pseudoholomorphic curves, which are the twistor lifts of minimal surfaces spanning this knot. The first major result of this thesis proves that this moduli space admits a smooth, locally finite-dimensional manifold structure under the following conditions: the asymptotic knot is regular in the sense of J. Fine (a condition that is generically satisfied and guarantees that the pseudoholomorphic curves are non-degenerate); the $G_2$ structure on $Z imes mathbb R$ is deformed into a regular $G_2$ structure; and provided that a certain natural conjecture from edge differential calculus is satisfied. This last assumption on edge theory can be removed by taking the quotient of hyperbolic space by a discrete subgroup of the group of hyperbolic isometries. This approach has both advantages and disadvantages, which are discussed in the manuscript. The most important theorem of this thesis expresses the dimension of a subset of the above moduli space of associative submanifolds as the difference between the Morse indices of the minimal surfaces determined by the boundary conditions. This theorem is proved using a diagonalisation result for the Hessian of the functional $mathcal F$, which requires a good understanding of the geometric structure of the twistor space. |
