Résumé : The generation of robust circadian oscillations in the suprachiasmatic nucleus relies on intercellular coupling and synchronization of cell-autonomous clocks. When uncoupled, individual cells display considerable heterogeneity in amplitude and period, and a large fraction of cells undergo damped oscillations. We review here modeling approaches and summarize theoretical findings regarding synchronization mechanisms and entrainment properties of the multi-cellular circadian network. We also discuss recent experimental efforts aiming to characterize the synchronization dynamics.
