Résumé : Hypoxemia is defined by a low partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2; less than about 75 mm Hg), regardless of the inspiratory oxygen fraction, and can be compensated for by an increase in cardiac output, so that oxygen delivery may not be critically reduced. Hypoxemia is therefore not synonymous with hypoxia, which reflects a lack of oxygen at the cellular level. Causes of hypoxemia can be categorized into four groups: decreased alveolar oxygen content, ventilation/perfusion mismatch and presence of a pulmonary shunt, impaired diffusion, and a decrease in the oxygen saturation of the mixed venous blood.
