Résumé : | Drawing from the experiences of 12 heterosexual Belgian-Laotian couples living in Belgium, this chapter examines their food consumption, situating it within their transnational life context encompassing the couples’ country of residence (Belgium) and the Laotian wife’s country of origin (Laos). This analysis demonstrates how gender roles related to food in Laos and the socio-economic contexts of migrants’ food in Belgium shape the couples’ food practices. It also shows how social contexts shape food consumption and makes it an important aspect of their daily life. The analysis of the food practices of Laotian-Belgian couples reveals that the conjugal norm for a sustainable relationship involves individual freedom and adaptation by the partner. |
