Résumé : | Objectives : In patient-centered approaches to care, an empathic therapeutic approach promotes compliance with treatment. However, studies show that empathy declines during medical and paramedical training. One of the parameters that could explain this decline in empathy would be the knowledge and listening of one's own body, known as interoception. The aim of this study is twofold: to determine whether links can be established between interoception, the practice of interoceptive or artistic activities and empathy, and to highlight possible variations in empathy during the physiotherapy curriculum. Material and method: Our study population was made up of volunteer students in their first and last years of the ULB physiotherapy curriculum. They completed an anonymous, on-line questionnaire including the MAIA-2 questionnaire assessing interoception, the Jefferson empathy scale and two questions one on "interoceptive" activitý and the other on any artistic practice. Results : Out of 138 complete responses , 47 from BA1 and 91 from MA1. A correlation between interoception and empathy (p=0.005; r=0.236) and a better degreé of empathy in MA1s than in BA1s (p=0.048) were objectified. Furthermore, people practicing an interoceptive and artistic activitý showed more empathy, compared to those practicing only one of these two activities or those practicing none (p=0.027). Discussion and Conclusion: Global empathy seems as complex to decipher as the literature suggests, but does not seem to be reduced in our physiotherapy students, contrary to what the literature suggests. Furthermore, we can affirm that, although real, the relationships between empathy and interoception are complex because they are so thin. |
