Résumé : | This chapter investigates the historical discourse used by representatives of the French regime in Belgium between 1792 and 1799. Inspired by recent post-national historiography of the occupied territories and sister-republics, it offers a more nuanced view of French policies of representation in the Belgian territories by focusing on processes of transfer and mutual influence. Official historical discourse, instead of being abstract and anti-historical, as has hitherto been accepted, was in reality pragmatically adapted to local circumstances. Elements of local historical culture, some of which seem hard to reconcile with revolutionary orthodoxy, were consciously appropriated in official discourse in an effort to legitimize as well as popularize French rule. |
