Résumé : In this chapter, I report researches that investigated whether our sensitivity to quantities, the Number Sense, plays a role in learning and doing arithmetic. I describe that scientific data are consistent about the involvement of numerical abilities in arithmetic tasks, although their contribution is modest. I then emphasize that there are actually many methodological limitations in assessing numerical and arithmetic abilities, what makes the systematic investigation of their relation more complex. Finally, I discuss some of the challenges that anyone concerned in assessing the Number Sense should take up.
