Résumé : This paper questions the effect of satisfaction on participation by bringing a network-based perspective. We argue that it is not only individuals’ degree of satisfaction per se that matters, but rather individuals’ degree of satisfaction relative to that of their social network, which can take the form of a positive differential (individuals report a higher degree of satisfaction than that of their network) or of a negative differential (individuals feel less satisfied than their network). We investigate the effect of satisfaction differential on conventional participation and unconventional participation (demonstration, boycott etc.). We use data collected online in 2015-2016 on a representative sample of Belgian citizens, across the three regions. Our methodological approach combines tools from Social Network Analysis (SNA) and classical statistical models (logit). Findings suggest that meso-insights could bring renewed perspectives on the phenomenon of political resentment and citizen disillusionment.
