Résumé : This article reviews the current theories about the tendency of tumour recurrence and intravesical chemotherapy in superficial carcinoma of the bladder. Certain epithelial mucosal factors on the one hand, and tumour cell implantation on the other, are probably the decisive prerequisites for a recurrence, which can be influenced by means of suitable intravesically applied drugs. It was possible to characterise 1 group of patients with optimal prognosis, and 1 group with poor prognosis, based on an E.O.R.T.C. study using either TUR alone or with thiotepa or VM 26 (epipodophyllotoxin). Another Belgian multicentric study with intravesical application of adriamycin after TUR has been able to show so far that the rate of recurrence is relatively low in the 1st yr under adriamycin therapy (39%), with a tolerable side-effect rate.
