Résumé : It has been shown that, far from being the instrument by which journalists distance themselves emotionally from the events they are reporting on, recourse to quotations may be a privileged way of imposing one's subjective vision. The apparent autonomy and authenticity of direct speech is an illusion, but it is one of the most effective means of securing a reality effect: 1) quotes are supposed to guarantee the integrity of the information recorded - the written text acting as a mirror of reality - and hence 2) quotes produce a semblance of objectivity since the writer is linguistically absent from the utterances that make up the quotation - there are no markers signalling his mediation.
