Résumé : AT the present time it is still difficult to compare the strengths of acids dissolved in different solvents either on an experimental or a theoretical basis. The acidity constant K a as defined by Brønsted is merely a measure of the strength of the acid in the given solvent. The acidity-functions as proposed by Hammett 1 and others 2 give only experimental means of comparing the acidity of various solutions. © 1955 Nature Publishing Group.
