Résumé : At the moment, OSI products supporting services such as X.400, FTAM, etc. are widely available in the marketplace. Unfortunately, these products are designed to support the OSI application on systems connected to a single network (e.g., an X.25 WAN, an IEEE 802 LAN,...). This situation results from the fact that the OSI standards for the lower layers of the OSI Reference Model have been published too recently to be integrated into a number of products. Some of these standards are currently in the standardisation process within ISO/IEC JTC1/SC6. At the time being, people need experience in making the "Global OSI Environment" by using the standards for layer 3 of the OSI RM. In this context, we decided to develop the concept of Lower Layer Laboratory (3L) aiming to implement OSI standards which are considered stable and using the principles defined by the OSI RM to extend the scope of OSI to architectures such as TCP/IP. © 1992.
