Résumé : The name of the Etruscan king Mezentius seems to be etymologically similar to Menzana, the Messapic Jove's attribute; this word means « (God) with the foal(s) ». In Latin historiography and poetry Mezentius is precisely Jove's rival and the opponent of the men Jove protects. Moreover Mezentius is related to horses, first as Impiuos Warrior and secondly by his son Lausus and his ally Messapus. Both are described by Virgil as horse breakers.
