Résumé : | Genome sizeisafundamentalbiologicaltraitthatisknowntoexhibithighdiversityamongeukaryoticspecies,butitsintraspecificdiversityhasonlyscarcelybeenstudiedtodate.Inscleractiniancorals,genomesizedataareonlyavailable forafewspecies.Inthisstudy,intra-andinterspecificvariationingenome sizeofthecoralgenus Agaricia collected fromCuraçaowereinvestigated. MorphologywascongruentwithgeneticanalysesofthenuclearmarkerITS2indelimitingthreeAgariciaspeciesamongoursamples.ArefinedFeulgenImageAnalysisDensitometry(FIAD)protocolyieldedgenomesizesthatranged from0.359pgto0.593pgwithinthisgenus(a1.6-foldrange).Thehighest averagegenomesizewasrecordedin A. agaricites (0.496 pg,1.2-foldrange), followedby A. lamarcki (0.460 pg,1.5-foldrange)and A. humilis (0.429pg, 1.3-foldrange).Theaveragegenomesizeof A. agaricites wassignificantlylargerthantheothertwospecies.Nocorrelationbetweenaveragegenomesizeand nucleotidepolymorphism π wasdetected,butwefoundanalmostlinearcorrelationbetweenintraspecificvarianceofgenomesizeand π (p =0.079).Genome sizeandcollectiondepthsofboth A. lamarcki and A. agaricites wasalso notsignificantlyassociated.Toourknowledge,thisstudyprovidesthefirstaccount ofintraspecificvariationincoralsandtheapparentcorrelationdetectedbetweenthenucleotidepolymorphismofaspeciesandthevarianceofitsgenome sizewillhavetobetestedusingalargertaxonomicspectrumofscleractinian coralsaswellasinothergroupsofanimals. |
