Résumé : | Along with civil society expansion in various Asian countries, transnational contacts and networks between Asian pro-democratic and anti-authoritarian activists have become more and more apparent. Facilitated by the use of social media, activists get inspired by their counterparts across borders, slogans are taken up, strategies are shared, and transnational organizations are created. This paper examines the mutual influences Taiwan and Hong Kong’s recent pro-democracy movements had on one another in terms of political discourse and transnational activism. By giving voice to six Taiwanese and Hong Konger activists, this paper analyses the construction of a transnational imagined political community. Moreover, this paper reflects on the regional and global dimensions of local mass demonstrations. |
