Résumé : In this paper, I am researching on conflicting identities and the Irish language in Northern Ireland. It begins with an overview of the political system and Irish legislation in Northern Ireland. Then, the analysis of Northern Irish newspaper articles digs into the Irish Language Act controversy, focusing on the period from 11 January 2020 to 14 June 2021. The Irish Language Act would give Irish an official status in Northern Ireland and despite its name, it has not been implemented. The analysis reveals that the Irish Language Act debate includes an opposition between unionists and nationalists, especially when it comes to power-sharing issues. However, the debate is not limited to an opposition of these two historical and political identities. Rather, there is a variety of actors with their own identities and the debate cannot be limited to the binary opposition between Nationalism and Unionism.
