Mémoire
Résumé : | This research work focuses on the empowerment of women in leadership positions through the female networks Women In International Security Brussels (WIIS Brussels) and Women in European External Action Service (WEEAS). It explores the journey and work of these two female networks, with a particular interest in the potential impact that these networks have had on the careers of their female members.Based on interviews with eleven women working in leadership positions, this work suggests that being part of a female network is beneficial in career advancement, but it is not enough to overcome structural gendered inequalities in the division of power. Female networks allow women to create sisterhood ties or simply strong professional ties to overcome the exclusion they face in informal male networks, which exclude women from participating in discussions that are sometimes necessary in negotiations or from the information exchanged to access promotions. This work also highlights the different tools used by WIIS Brussels and WEEAS to create social capital for their members. These tools can be mentoring, workshops of all kinds, seminars or simple lunch meetings. This work does not aim to create a gap between men and women by categorizing them according to their sex, but rather to provide an overview of the gender inequalities that can occur when talking about leadership. |
