Résumé : | The present work has the aim to scrutinize the role of media discourse in reifying a particular portrayal of an ethnic minority. This paper analyses the Italian press discourse on the Romani community in Italy during the declaration of a state of emergency on the part of the Italian government in the years 2008-2010 regarding the “Roma issue”. In order to carry out the research, four relevant Italian newspapers having different political orientations were selected. Within the theoretical framework of social constructionism, the triangulation of lexicometric analysis, Critical Discourse Analysis and the employment of frames was utilized for scrutinizing the newspapers' articles. The main findings will demonstrate that the Italian press discourse contributed to shape a vilified image of the Romani community in Italy. |
