Résumé : | Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve (MMFR) in Peninsular Malaysia is known as the longest-managed mangrove forest, as the ‘management plans’ can be traced back to 1904. The timber-based production through intermediate thinning and clear-felling operations has been the main objective of its management. After revision for over a century, the mangroves are now being harvested under a 30-year rotation in the productive zones. The 10-year management plans are being released by the Forestry Department aiming for efficient silviculture management. Despite the century-old management, the mangrove biomass and quality were found to decrease in recent years. Therefore, we analyzed all the available management plans between 1904 and 2019. We summarized both qualitative and quantitative data from the plans, emphasizing silvicultural perspectives, in search of trends of changes. Finally, a comparison with relevant literature on MMFR studies was carried out to evaluate the potential issues in current management. We summarized and integrated the silvicultural data from the management plans for the first time. The area, yield, and financial variation trends of the forest products were analyzed, the historical changes were explained. The high yield per ha of both charcoal and poles in the last score years resulted from exploitation in restrictive productive forests, which should raise a concern of the scientists and decision-makers. Then we discussed the dilemma between wood product harvesting and ecosystem service protection. This study will help the managers to take appropriate decisions on the future monitoring and sustainable management of the MMFR. |
