Mémoire
Résumé : | The conflict in Kivu has long been considered the deadliest conflict since World War II. Figures such as 6.9 million or 18 million dead people are shared by the media and on social networks. With a scientific approach, this study attempts to understand how these figures are counted to determine the number of casualties in this armed conflict. It will also try to understand whether the dissemination of these figures by various actors can influence the increase of these numbers. In order to produce a clear brief, key terms and concepts will be defined at the beginning of this report. It will also be concluded that the incorrect use and interpretation of certain terms can also lead to an analysis of the figures that does reflect reality. At the end of the research, it will be shown that the different demographic and epidemiological techniques used by the experts lead to very different results. Furthermore, the conflict has evolved since the end of the second Congo war, making it more difficult to collect data and thus to conduct reliable studies. |
