Mémoire
| Résumé : | As European integration progresses, the counter-movement of Euroscepticism naturally emerges. There are many factors that can promote this feeling of resistance to the European Union among the population, and each country has its own circumstances that can exacerbate this feeling. This paper argues that in the case of Spain, one of the most historically pro-European countries, the politicisation of national and international crises by the far-right Vox party with negative Eurosceptic messages for political exploitation has eroded some of this Europeanism, negatively affecting the pro-European sentiment of Spaniards. Through the exploration of the Eurosceptic behaviour of this party, unique in Spain, and the visibility of its position in public opinion - in the media, social networks... - at two key moments such as the Catalan independence crisis and the coronavirus crisis, this paper presents evidence through the analysis of surveys, studies and third-party experiments that there is a negative causal effect between Vox's Eurosceptic messages and Spaniards' support for Europe. The implications of these findings suggest that political parties contribute, at least in part, to the crystallisation of Euroscepticism in public opinion. |
