Mémoire
| Résumé : | The Balkan Peninsula lays on the South-East part of Europe and encompasses countries that have emerged from conflict and which are at different stages of their journey towards membership of the European Union. This analysis has in its center the enlargement process towards Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia. The European perspective has been a strong incentive for the Western Balkans and continues to be the driving force of reform for the whole region. The enlargement process is one of the most important tools where the EU has, to promote European values and to establish security and prosperity incontinent.Along the path of the research, I will be explaining the role of the institutions by the approach of Neo-functionalism. From the term ‘spillover’ used by neo-functionalism scholars it came to the ‘Copenhagen Criteria’ which are key conditions before a candidate state must fulfill before accession. As it is summarized in the title it will be examined the role of the supranational institutions how they shape the outcomes in further enlargement. This Master Dissertation will be conducted by a qualitative method, analyzing the role of the three main EU institutions (European Parliament, European Commission, and European Council) in the enlargement process. In addition, it will be perceived how the preferences of the Member States have an impact on the process. |
