Résumé : Drawing on two case studies whose scope range from the local to the continental levels, it is shown how a minute comparison of technical behavior and social prescriptions related to pottery manufacture in present-day Africa allows for the reconstruction of varying processes of social interaction. Considering issues such as language expansion, the creation and maintenance of social boundaries and the development of particular economic structures, the paper first aim is to exploit ethnographical observations for building general models of interpretation. It also illustrates how the comparison of certain elements of the material world may help in the reconstruction of recent and more distant historical processes.
