Résumé : | The results of a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of local bending effects induced by ply drop-off in CFRP/honeycomb sandwich panels are presented. The objective of the investigation was to validate a simple model for engineering analysis of sandwich panels with tapered face laminates presented in a previous paper. The experimental investigation was conducted by using electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI), which provides very accurate out-of-plane surface displacement measurements. Six CFRP/honeycomb sandwich test specimens of three different configurations were manufactured, each configuration being characterised by different elastic response properties. The CFRP/honeycomb sandwich test specimens were loaded in compression, and comparison of the theoretically predicted and measured out-of-plane deflection profiles revealed a good match with respect to the local bending response induced by the ply drop-offs. However, the experiments also revealed the presence of a significant local bending response caused by the discrete support of the face laminates provided by the honeycomb core cells. © 1996 Elsevier Science Limited. |
