Résumé : Objectives: Given the importance of storytelling in the psychological development of the young child and given the fact that language and imaginative skills are often poorly developed in children living in an institutional context, the authors have implemented a research-action which offers a therapeutic workshop to 4 children between 3 and 6 years old who are all placed for a long time and have in common painful family experiences. Method: The psychotherapy takes place once a week during one year, includes 4 children and 2 co-therapists and uses different tools such as storytelling, psychodrama and projective techniques which have in common that they refer to narration and imagination. The use of these methodologies enables young children with relatively undeveloped abilities for self-expression to communicate important aspects of their internal experience. In order to assess the therapeutic input of the psychotherapy on the children, the authors propose to study the evolution of their narratives and graphic expression. Data were collected using videotapes (observations, narratives) and document analysis (collection of children's drawings with self-portrait, drawing of a house and a person). Results: Data were investigated to discover the evolution of narrative processes and characteristics of discourse (thematic and formal analysis) and also the evolution of the range of defensive and adaptive mechanisms, the variety of the children’s self-conceptions and representations of attachment. In the discussion, the authors will also highlight the role of the spatial and temporal organisation as well as the part of the “transitional objects” (e.g. a doll) of the psychotherapy.
