| Résumé : | Abstract Although pacifism and nonviolence are grounded in theoretical and empirical grounds that render their potential contribution increasingly pertinent in response to crises such as that caused by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, European Green have struggled to reconcile their pacifist commitments with this geopolitical crisis. Trapped between unconditional military support and declarations of abstract pacifism devoid of concrete strategic alternatives, they abandoned their historic pacifist leanings precisely when theory justified it. An examination of parliamentary documents and official communications during 2022–2025 for three Western European parties selected through Most Different Systems Design – Bündnis 90/Die Grünen (Germany), Les Écologistes (France), and Europa Verde (Italy) – interwoven with a careful historical reconstruction of each state’s strategic culture reveals the institutional, historical, and national factors that constrained the articulation of strategic pacifist critique. This detailed analysis exposes three very different paths that nonetheless all result in the marginalisation of strategic pacifism from party-political discourse. |
