| This article traces the history and current state of contracted braille in Belgium, from its early adoption in specialized education in the nineteenth century to its near-total abandonment at the turn of the twenty-first. After reviewing the main stages of Francophone codification, from the Abrégé orthographique français (1880) to the Code Braille Français Uniformisé (2006), it examines how braille instruction is organized across Belgium's two main linguistic communities. It then analyses the converging factors that have led to the discontinuation of contracted braille: timetable constraints, technological change, and the rise of speech synthesis. The article concludes that contracted braille, now confined to experienced users, represents an endangered cultural heritage that deserves to be documented and recognized. |
