Résumé : Home enteral nutrition (HEN) is generally a safe technique for giving nutritional support as a life sustaining therapy to patients with oral failure (usually due to dysphagia from neurological diseases or head and neck cancer). Some have disease-related malnutrition or anorexia. Most of these are patients with a “normal intestine” in whom there is a reduction in the oral intake below the minimal amount necessary to maintain protein-energy equilibrium. Short or long-term HEN may also be provided for patients with moderate intestinal failure (IF). The overall clinical outcome (survival and quality of life) of patients receiving HEN is poor due to the underlying disease process; however it is much better in those with IF. A multidisciplinary nutrition support team (NST) should initiate and monitor patients receiving HEN.
