| Résumé : | This chapter proposes the concept of ‘model’ as a tool to describe, analyse, and understand traditional arts and crafts in Laos. The model is the basis around which artisans build their craft; the core element around which they weave to create a piece of fabric, a song or a basket, which can be associated with a specific community or region, while also being a vessel of individual creativity and technical changes. The method of the paradigmatic analysis, consisting of gathering under a vertical axis the elements that are considered ‘similar,’ is used to highlight the model of a piece. By approaching different cultural practices through the lens of the model, this chapter proposes a methodology exploring the relation between crafts and identities, but also how cultural practices go through social, material and technical changes while remaining relevant in their role of ethnic expression and identification. |
