Résumé : Tasso’s 1586 letter to Bianca Cappello survives in two versions: an unmailed draft written in Ferrara on 10 July and the final letter sent from Mantua on 15 August. The first was composed immediately after the grand duchess granted him 25 ducats, but Tasso—about to leave Sant’Anna and wary of losing the money—chose not to send it until he had the funds in hand. Only a month later, once the ambassador Albizi confirmed delivery of the money, Tasso recopied and updated the text and sent it to Bianca, where it entered the Medici archives. The two versions reveal his caution and highlight the editorial need to distinguish between letters actually sent and drafts that remained outside real correspondence.
