Résumé : This chapter introduces the reader to the general aim and ambition of the CONNEKT project in order to precise the temporality of the meso-level analysis which is the object of the book. Firstly, we highlight the different conceptual, ethical and methodological issues we have faced during this phase of the project. Indeed, if any research focusing on radicalization and violent extremism encounters challenges regarding data collection, access to fieldworks, security and administrative obligations, this is even more the case both in authoritarian regimes and in countries where ethnic, social and political conflicts are still salient. We also insist on the opportunities offered by the comparison between the MENA and Balkans regions, notably in terms of distancing from an “islamization of radicalization” by taking into account in the analysis groups related to extreme-right and nationalist ideologies. The second and third parts of this introduction present to the reader the vernacular turn in security studies that push researchers to stress the role of the context and experience of communities in radicalization perspectives. The next part of this chapter deals with six methodological considerations intended to better capture the complex and situated approaches of security experiences allowing the production of comprehensive and inclusive insights into the role of communities. The fifth section of the introduction delves into the definition and operationalization of communities and details the selection of the different case studies in each national context. Finally, the last part of this introductory chapter presents the structure of the book.
