Résumé : This book addresses the metaphysical question of the first principles as articulated by Damascius (458/462-538) in his Problems and Solutions Concerning the First Principles (De Principiis). Damascius’ treatise is a major philosophical work of Antiquity, offering a radical and profound enquiry into principles. The present book stresses the philosophical and historical relevance of Damascius’ work with regard to this metaphysical issue and provides a detailed analysis of the De Principiis. This study is based on the hypothesis that the aporetic opening of Damascius’ treatise and his treatment of the concept of an absolute and completely ineffable principle are the first step toward an enquiry about the first principles which can be called “principles,” namely the One and its threefold manifestation as One-All, All-One, and One-Being. Recent studies have stressed Damascius’ aporetic method and the radical nature of his view regarding the concept of an absolute principle. However, little attention has been paid to Damascius’ treatment of the One, its causality, and to the ways in which he deals with the contradictory requirements of the first principles, on the one hand, and of human intelligence, on the other. The present book aims to develop a unified reading of Damascius’ De principiiis. Based on a textual and contextual approach to Damascius’ works, this book provides an analysis of the De Principiis’ arguments on the Ineffable, the One, and the procession of Being.
