Résumé :

In this communication, I reflected on the “crossfire” (Becker, 1997) I found myself in while working as a teaching assistant within a journalism program and as a PhD student investigating human resources professionals within media organizations. This position was made particularly uncomfortable by the scarcity of journalism jobs in French-speaking Belgium (Libert et al., 2023): any link with a potential employer was a possible resource to be exploited. I detailed how I navigated the « industry proximity » (Vonderau, 2014) needed to produce my research and the ethical dilemmas I encountered, reflecting on the field notes gathered during 2 speed-dating events and a 3-month long ethnography within the HR department of a Belgian broadcasting company.
