Résumé : The first inequality in the world is simply the fact of being born in one country rather than another. Migration policies in the North exclude thousands of people from the system of legal mobility. Lacking access to documents allowing them to enter countries legally, potential migrants have no alternative but to travel without legal status. The possibility of migrating is a fundamental human right but the tightening of controls and the externalization and militarization of borders very often expose people who try to reach Europe or the United States without a visa to fatal risks. This situation of vulnerability adds to the violence of death, the violence of disappearance. At Europe’s southern borders, for example, thousands of people disappear, are swallowed by the sea, and their bodies are not always recovered. Moreover, the irregular situation of migrants who cannot access refugee status in these territories makes them highly vulnerable.
