Résumé : Older individuals have physiological modifications of the nail, especially a slower nail growth, accounting for the susceptibility to fungal infection, and an altered contour resulting from bony distortions, altered biomechanics, and lifelong repeated trauma. This may impair footwear and even ambulation. Nail consistency changes mean that fingernails tend to soften and weaken with age whereas toenails tend to thicken and harden. Aging predisposes to malignant tumors, and exposure to a large number of drugs leads to the risk of side-effects to the nails.
