Résumé : This chapter aims to analyse the performance of the Organisation of American States (OAS) and the African Union (AU) in democracy protection. We investigate the similarities and differences in the institutional trajectory of the agenda of democracy protection, as well as the performance of both regional organisations on the topic. Considering the relevance of the episodes, the availability of sources (particularly in relation to the AU cases), and the objectives of this chapter, we will analyse two episodes of democracy breakdown within the domain of each organisation. In the case of OAS, we will assess the cases of Honduras (2009) and Venezuela (2012–2022), cases that involve actions and challenges for the operationalisation of measures related to democracy protection. In the case of the AU, focus is given to the crises in Sudan (2019) and Mali (2020), cases that resulted in AU’s actions with different instruments. Our research design aims to assess the performance of the institutions considering their formal instruments as well as agency and political strategies aspects.
