Résumé : | This short chapter highlights Eric Maskin’s stellar career and influence on the economics profession at large, and on Harvard more specifically, through his own research, his guidance of and interaction with students and colleagues in the most prestigious US and UK research institutions, as well as all over the world. It summarises the content and importance of his work on mechanism design, for which he shared a Nobel Prize in economics, but also on game theory, industrial organisation, voting theory and political economics. The chapter also highlights Eric’s work on comparative economic systems and the “soft budget constraint”, an example of his broad intellectual interests, which led in this case to a very fruitful interaction with Harvard colleague János Kornai. |
