Abstract de conférence
Résumé : | To better understand the concept and mechanisms at play in what we collectively refer to as ‘(post-)extractivism’, I propose taking a critical look at our own research practices. As an anthropologist, I am particularly sensitive to the delicate process of gathering knowledge in a specific territory and circulating it elsewhere. Even when practicing an anthropology of the nearby, as I do, the question of how to enter a place and its dynamics, and how to ‘gain’ knowledge from it, remains a complex issue.Drawing on William James’ theory of knowledge, I (self-)critically examine a series of everyday research situations, which make tangible the concrete and practical nature of epistemological issues. I argue that James’ assumption that “we know a thing as soon as we have learned how to behave towards it” serves as an ideal ground for exploring responsible, engaged research practices.Drawing from research that I’ve (co)conducted in and about Brussels’ public spaces, I will cover a range of research methods from pure observation to participatory and co-creative action-research. Which tools capture the stakes of the field, and in what ways? What kind of relationships do they engage? What disturbances or changes do they provoke? What translations, transpositions, or mediums allow knowledge to travel? The insights and points of attention I present are intended to contribute to our collective effort in crafting post-extractivist methods. |
