Résumé : Located some 45 km east of Aswan, Wadi Rasras is an important crossroads between Egypt, Nubia, and the Red Sea. After a limited preliminary prospecting, it appears that Wadi Rasras gathers an impressive quantity of petroglyphs ranging from prehistory to modern times, and that various rock art traditions coexist. Wadi Rasras offers a unique insight on the cross-cultural setting of the Eastern Desert at that time. Beyond the mere iconographic and stylistic analysis to which rock art studies are generally confined, this paper aims at addressing the social function of the rock art as symbolic performer in the place-making process, emphasising the fact that more than one process was put in place by different social groups and that the interplay between those processes had an impact on the material outcome we now see at the site. The intersection between social performances and natural landscape is also discussed.
