Résumé : In line with the recommendations of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Belgian federal minister for Climate has organized a public consultation on “just transition” between 2022 and 2024. The aim was to help design more effective policies in the battle against climate change that limit social inequalities and pursue general welfare. Policy recommendations were presented at the March 2024 European Conference for a Just Transition, held under the Belgian Presidency of the European Union. This agenda was further pushed in light of the Environment Council of 17 June 2024 at the EU-level. This paper assesses to what extent policy efforts for a just ecological transition within the European Union, in a political climate marked by rising polarization and ideological divides, uphold not only the principle of social justice within Europe but also takes into account the situation of the Global South. It can be observed that the need to contain political dissent linked to the social impact of climate change policies within and between European Member States curtails attention given to the issue of climate justice on the global scale and the impact on the Global South.
