Résumé : This chapter provides an extensive discussion of the concept of autocratization. It first discusses the reasons explaining the recent and rapid development of autocratization studies. It then provides a detailed discussion about this concept, its definitions, properties, scope, and limitation. Furthermore, it highlights three key features that render the concept of autocratization particularly suitable for studying phenomena contrary to democratization: its comprehensiveness as an umbrella term; its resonance allowing for easy association with other commonly used terms, both general and specialized, such as autocracy, democracy, and democratization; and finally, its exactitude that facilitates the external differentiation of autocratization from related but distinct empirical phenomena. The chapter concludes with two open issues about measurement validity and the consequences of the inner duality of the concept of autocratization.
